How do I reset the hosts file?

October 19, 2015 - 8:53 pm

You can reset the changes made by Spybot to the Windows “hosts” file to its original configuration by undoing Spybot’s immunization.

To undo Spybot’s Immunization:

  • Open the Spybot – Search & Destroy “Start Center” by right-clicking the Spybot icon and choosing the option to “Run as administrator”.
  • In the Start Center, click “Immunization”.
  • In the Immunization window, click “Undo Immunization”.
    • You can then navigate to the hosts file location:
      C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\

This folder contains your “hosts” file, along with many regularly-created backups of the hosts file.

You can then delete the hosts file and the backup host files and restore a default hosts file.

Please see here for instructions from Microsoft to restore the hosts file.

Please do not delete other files located in this folder.
